Halliwick

The Halliwick Association of Swimming Therapy (Halliwick AST) is a registered charity.  It is a voluntary association set up in 1952 by James (‘Mac’) and Phyl McMillan to develop the teaching of water safety and swimming for disabled people using the “Halliwick Concept’.

Halliwick is based on principles of hydrostatics, hydrodynamics and kinesiology.  It is a holistic approach, bringing together knowledge about the water and the body; teaching and learning; motivation; challenge; activities, games and music; group dynamics, disability equality issues and swimming strokes.

More information about the Halliwick concept can be found at; www.halliwick.org

STA’s Rockhopper series

The Rockhopper series is an exciting programme consisting of 9 awards which introduce learners with disabilities to the joy of water. The series develops water confidence and water skills as well as increasing water safety awareness and knowledge.

Visual Stories

Visual stories—short, illustrated narratives often combining photos with simple text—are invaluable tools for supporting children and adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). They help prepare individuals for new experiences, reduce anxiety, and foster independence by making abstract concepts or unfamiliar situations concrete and predictable. Flash Cards

The national governing body’s Learn to Swim team have developed flash cards for learners and to help support a variety of learning styles.

The translated resources are being provided in the hopes of supporting swimming teachers who may have a language barrier between themselves and their learners.

Having been created in English – the flash cards are now available in an additional 17 languages;

Arabic English Hindi – (India) Polish Romanian Ukrainian
Bengali French Indonesian Portuguese Russian Urdu
Chinese Gujarati – (India) Japanese Punjabi – (India) Spanish Welsh
